 Marie E. Irwin
COXSACKIE Ñ Marie E. Irwin. ÒGo to sleep my little babyÓ Ñ a lullaby she sang each night to her 13 children as infants and toddlers.
Born June 29, 1928, Marie Eleanor Eberhart Irwin has now gone to her eternal sleep at the age of 82, on July 31, 2010 in Washington State, after a brief illness, with her daughters Nancy and Merry and granddaughter Kelsey by her side.
Mom was a lifelong Coxsackie resident. As a child, Coxsackie was her summer home where she later married our dear Dad, Cornelius B. ÒNeilÓ Irwin Jr. in 1948 and became their home where they raised 13 children on Van Dyke Street and operated the Irwin Oil Company for more than 25 years. She later worked at Albany Medical Center, retiring about 10 years ago. She then relocated to Green Lake Road where she resided with her daughter JoAnn (and her late husband Bruce Cornwell) and their triplet toddler girls for four years. She eventually purchased a home of her own down the road.
She was involved most of her life in the Order of the Eastern Star, serving as Matron of Kaksakee Chapter OES #873. She was also appointed a Grand Officer of NYS OES.
Mom was a faithful member of the United Methodist Church of Coxsackie, supporting it always with her prayers, her gifts and talents. She was always working at the suppers, the rummage sales and singing in the choir.
Mom was multi-talented with accomplished sewing and baking as her specialties. She made all of her eight daughtersÕ wedding gowns, some attendantsÕ gowns and suits as well as all wedding cakes. She had a warm, generous heart and spirit, an infectious smile and opened her home to all family and friends. Always in our family you were family Ñ step grands, greats, and all including all of the ÔextendedÕ families we married into.
She is survived by 12 children and their spouses: Rev. Neil and Jennie Irwin of Middleburgh, NY; Nancy and Brian Jutson of Ranier, WA; Laura and Melvin Cain of Mt. Desert ME; Charles Irwin of West Coxsackie; Kathleen and Mert Hulbert of Oak Hill; Carol and Bob Hansen of Freehold; Merry Irwin of Battleground, WA; Wendy and Dan Downs of Trenton, FL; James and Sue Irwin of Erieville; Tom and Julieanna Irwin of Coxsackie; Tammy and James Cole of Coxsackie; and JoAnn Cornwell of Catskill.
Her grandchildren: Cornelius, IV, Michael and Jason Irwin, Shana Pittman, Christine Reese, Edwin James Brockett, Erik and Gregory Hansen, Kelsey Brown, James and Jacob Irwin, Nicole and Melody Irwin, Kayla and Zachary Cole, Abigail, Sarah and Rebecca Cornwell.
Her great grandchildren: Tyler, Nicholas and Cornelius Irwin V, Madison and Julia Pittman, Laura Tompkins and Tristan Valencia, Tyler, Jameson and Tori Brockett, Gavin and Alexis Shaw.
She was predeceased by her parents Charles and Eleanor Eberhart, her half sister Carol Eberhart, her husband Cornelius B. ÒNeilÓ Irwin Jr., her son Norman Leigh Irwin and her granddaughter Cassie Romano.
A memorial service will be held at her family church, the United Methodist Church of Coxsackie on Sept. 11, 2010 at 10 a.m. with Rev. Robert Johnson and her son Rev. Neil Irwin officiating. A celebration of her life will follow at the Quarry Steak House in Climax. All are respectfully invited to join our family to share our memories and motherÕs journey through life.
The family suggests donations to honor our MomÕs memory be sent to the United Methodist Church of Coxsackie or the United Methodist Church of North Blenheim.
She lived as she signed her cards É Luck, Love, Life and Laughter. ÒKeep God with youÓ was always her parting advice on the telephone which we strive to do. Our matriarch is gone, but her legacy will live on in the family she loved and nurtured. We are so blessed to have had such wonderful parents.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Sopris-Murray Funeral Home, Greenville.
