The section of Letcher County, KY where the Diles-Dials/Thacker/Maynard
families lived later became Knott Co., KY.
Octavia Jane "Tavy" Maynard married Robert Richard "Buddy" Diles or Dials
in Knott Co., KY on Sept 8, 1884.
James Maynard's wife was Vicy (Dials), sister of Robert. They were
married about 1881 in Martin Co., KY.
The above mentioned Maynards are father and daughter and they married a
Dials sister and brother.
According to a marriage record for Octavia's brother Thomas, his second
marriage was to Josephine "Piny" Davis and his parents were James and
Nancy Maynard. No surname was given for his mother Nancy. With further
research, I have determined Thomas' mother was Nancy (Parsley), dau. of
John & Jemima "Mima" (Murphy) Parsley.
The 1880 & 1900 census records match for the age of Octavia, but the
difference is quite significant for James B. Maynard. The 1880 census
shows he was born 1855, but the 1900 census shows he was born in 1846,
which matches with the son of Rhoda Maynard identified on the 1850 Pike
Co., KY census, which is found at the end of this documentation. Also,
Rhoda was well past her child bearing years when Octavia Jane Maynard was
born in June 1871, which supports the conclusion that Octavia & James
were father and daughter instead of siblings. Consequently, I believe it
is more accurate to use the 1900 census as a source for the year of birth
for James.

According to my great aunt Mabel (Davis) Nichols [daughter of Floyd &
Elizabeth "Bessie" (Dials) Davis], Octavia's husband Robert Dials/Diles
drowned in the Tug River while working in the timber/logging business.
The drowning occurred about 1909.
On the 1910 Mingo Co., WV (Warfield district) Octavia Jane (Maynard)
Dials is the next door neighbor to the family of John Henry & Comfort
(Sansom) Maynard. Octavia's maiden name was Maynard and she was the
nearest neighbor to her uncle John Henry Maynard. Since Octavia was
widowed by 1910, it would make sense that she would have moved closer to
relatives.

have been born out of wedlock. Many people think Rhoda's husband was the
son of Jesse Maynard b. 1775 NC, s/o William Maynard, Jr. b. 1754, s/o
William (English Immigrant) Maynard, Sr. b. abt. 1728 England.
*** This James is the same James B. Maynard, who in 1881 married Levisa
"Vicy" (Dials), b. 1850, d/o Robert Thacker (or Diles) and Elizabeth
"Betty" (Sparkman) who were married 6 SEP 1859 in Letcher Co., KY in a
section of Letcher Co., KY, that later became Knott Co., KY.
