According to a Pitzer Family History by the Newbery/Newbrey family, James W Pitzer served in the 67th Virginia Regiment in the Mexican War. He and Anna (Mary) Elizabeth Shanks were married in Martinsburg, VA, from where they traveled down the Ohio River to New Richmond, then to New Harmony where he worked in a cooper stove factory at Ripley. Later they moved to Buford, OH. James W and Anna are buried in Buford Cemetery.

From Kevin Jacob "Jake" Pitzer, photocopy of a document found among the papers of John Pitzer, brother of Louella Pitzer Roads:
"Elizah Pitzer had one son, sons name was Eli. Said Eli married and had two sons James and Benjamin. They both went to Virginia to work as field bosses over colored people. Benjamin went to Cincinnnati to work and James married at age 22 to Anna E Shanks age 16 before leaving Virginia to come to Brown Co Ohio to work. James worked at a barrell factory at Ripley Ohio later moved to New Harmony in Brown County lived there about 3 yrs then moved to Buford Ohio Highland Co where he lived until his death. He is buried in the Buford Cemetery."
From "Unidentified Pitzers" by Shirley Hermstad, 19 Jun 1995:
"Came down the Ohio [River] from Martinsburg, VA to New Richmond, OH after 1830."

At the time of the 1830 census, five Pitzer households were listed in Berkeley Co, Virginia. All five of these households had one or more male children age 15 or under. It is possible that James Wlliam Pitzer was living in one of these five households:
  Conrad Pitzer (born 1770-1780)
 Jacob Pitzer (1794-1858)
 Martin Luther Pitzer (1789-1870)
 (Mrs.) Mary Pitzer (born 1770-1780)
 William Pitzer (born 1780-1790)
At the time of the 1840 census, five Pitzer households were listed in Berkeley Co, Virginia. Two of these households had one or more male children age 15-20. It is possible that James Wlliam Pitzer was living in one of these two households:
  Conrad Pitzer (born 1770-1780)
 Martin Luther Pitzer (1789-1870)
 ______________________________________________
Compiled from multiple sources, 9 Feb 03:
At the time of the 1850 census, Jerrard Pitzer lived near John Sampson Pitzer (recorded as John S Pitzer) and George Washington Pitzer (recorded as George W Pitzer) in Union Twp, Highland Co, Ohio. The only other Pitzer household in Highland Co in 1850 was that of Jacob [A] Pitzer (George Washington Pitzer's father) in Dodson Twp, next to Union Twp and, like Union Twp, on the county line with Clinton Co, Ohio.
At the time of the 1860 Federal Census, Jared Pitzer lived next door to James William Pitzer (recorded as James W Pitzer) in Clay Twp, Highland Co, Ohio. John [Sampson] Pitzer also lived in Clay Township, and he named three of his sons James William Pitzer, Jerrard Pitzer and George W Pitzer. Shirley Hermstad in her manuscript of 19 Jun 1995 proposes that Jerrard Pitzer, James William Pitzer and John Sampson Pitzer are probably brothers. There is probably also a family connection to George Washington Pitzer, who was the son of Jacob A Pitzer and Catherine Specht, both of whom came from Berkeley Co, Virginia to Dodson Twp, Highland Co, Ohio. James William Pitzer may have named his son Jacob Andrew Pitzer after Jacob A Pitzer, possibly his uncle.

From Beth Mitchell ([email protected]) at Rootsweb Brown County, Ohio Message Board, 5 Jan 10:
“I am the g-g-grandaughter of James W. Pitzer. I have researched the family for 20 plus years. There seems to be much misinformation that has been accepted. The Indian story is not provable in any way. The information I have as far as lineage is me, Thomas Hamer Pitzer, Jacob Andrew Pitzer, James W. Pitzer, Samuel Pitzer, Matthias Pitzer who came to America from Germany. Have obits, deeds, etc.”
