Note: 11 Nov 98 From Jackie Decker at [email protected] "I have found some documented information on John L. Gray in the form of his obituary: "John Lytle Gray was born in Ripley, Ohio, Oct. 24, 1822; died at 8:15 a. m. Aged 82 years, 10 months, and 26 days. He was one of eleven children, three of whom are still living. He was married to Lucinda Runyon at Sardinia, Brown Co., Ohio, April 20th 1845. She departed this life a little over eight years ago and was born from the same residence in Tarkio to her last place of rest, June 17, 1897. To them nine children were born, seven of whom are living; Mr. L. W. Gray of near Tarkio; Mrs. J. C. Davidson, of Butte, Mont; Mrs. Vanlandingham of Southern Missouri; P. H. and Ira F. Gray of Tarkio; Mrs. VanGundy, of Fremont, Co., IA; Mrs. A. L. McPherson, of Tarkio. One son died at the age of two years before they left Ohio; and Flora E. at the age of thirteen, near Tarkio. Father Gray was a bricklayer by trade. He began this occupation early in life; and followed it constantly for many years. Many of the buildings in this region in Ohio were erected by him. Some of the most substantial structures on the west side of our county were put up by his hand and some of the business buildings in Tarkio. The last on which he worked was a business house here in 1881, he being then 59 years of age. So that for a period extending over fort-six years he was able to work at his trade. After their marriage he and his wife settled in Russelville, Brown Co. and remained there for two years, he following his trade, Then he and his brother bought a farm in partnership in Highland Co., Ohio; and the family resided there for many years. In 1875 he removed to Sardinia, Brown Co, where he was in mercantile business for two years. From there they came to Atchison Co., Mo., reaching this county April 26 th 1867, He bought a farm five miles south of Rock Port, and they lived there twelve years. In August 1879 he purchased and they moved to a farm north west of Tarkio. There they lived until he and his wife settled in town, in 1892. Later he bought the farm south east of town which he still owned. We need not remind his former neighbors of his life-long industry, tenacity and courage which through these facts shine out so clearly. Born in a time when hardihood and selfhelp were indispensible, of pioneer parents, he had the kind of qualities to help build up a new country and take pride in its progress. Father Gray united with the Methodist Episcopal church in Russelville, Ohio the year after his marriage. He lived a member of the Methodist Episcopal church until the close of his life. He helped organize a Methodist Episcopal Church in Mowreystown, Ohio, and another at Mackey's school house in Atchison Co. near his farm. After removed to the North-west of town he transferred his membership to the Methodist Episcopal church in Tarkio and in it had been a Trustee for a great many years and so continued to the time of his death. He was loyal to the church, and tried to bear his part toward its progress." 13 Nov 98 From Jackie Decker at [email protected] "J. L.
