Notes
a. Note:   Leander Curtis (Lee) Poole was born in the Hopewell Community of Neeses, South Carolina on 22 MAY 1901 and died 15 MAR 1965. He married Mallie May Blackwell on 20 Dec 1922. MALLIE was the daughter of Sidney Album Blackwell and Margaret Angelina Matthews. Mallie was born in South Carolina on 25 AUG 1905 and died 10 OCT 1990. Both are buried in the Poole Cemetery in Salley, South Carolina.
Both of his parents died at a very early age. Annette Poole Yon (a daughter) says her father, Curtis Lee, was raised by his aunt Banner Adrana Gleaton. Annette says her father opened his first store when he was 16. Curtis Lee knew he didn´t want to pick any more cotton in his life and looked around for another way to earn a living. He told his children that they would have jobs to do around the house and store but he´d never make them Pick cotton. The family lived above his store in the small community of Sawyerdale, South Carolina located across from Kurt Poole Road off Highway 3. Curtis Lee turned out to be a very successful business man. At one time, he owned a store, dairy, cotton gin, grit's mill, Saw mill and over 1000 acres that was farmed by tenant farmers. However, Curtis Lee was heavy in debt when he passed away. Most everything had to be sold. The land that remained was divided among his wife and children. The only thing still standing at the home/store Location is a gas pump. Annette says, ``A family moved a mobile home next door to the old Home/store. They heated with a wood heater. They pulled boards off of the store and burned them for fuel. Everything has been taken down now. Annette´s daughter (Jan Yon Shumpret) has built a home on the old home/store site and resides there with her family. Annette also said that "John Peele" was her father's best friend. John was a short little man and Leander was tall and thin. They looked like Mutt & Jeff.

 County of Orangeburg..............Letters of Guardianship
By: J. M. Hughes, Probate Judge
 To: B. K. Gleaton
Whereas, an application in due form of law, as appears by proceedings recorded in the Office of the Probate Court for the County of Orangeburg in said State, has been made to me by B. K. Gleaton and Curtis Lee Poole to appoint B. K. Gleaton as Guardian of the person and estate of Curtis Lee Pool, a minor now residing in the said County of Orangeburg and entitled to a distributive share in the estate of Donnie Pool, amount to seven hundred and forty-five dollars and 22/100 ($745.22) in the hands of the Master of Orangeburg County. And whereas, he said, B. K. Gleaton, has filed his bond, as found in this Office, as such Guardian as required by law. Now, therefore, for the better securing the said estate for the benefit of the minor and for his more careful maintenane and education, I do hereby commit the tuition, guardianship, and education of the said Curtis Lee Pool to you, the said B. K. Gleaton, charging you to maintain him in meat, drink, washing, lodging, clothing, and such good education as may be fitting, according to the circumstances of interest of the said Curtis Lee Pool during his minority, take charge of his estate, do such things as a Guardian should, and render a true and faithful account of the said estate, and of your management thereof, when thereunto duly required. Given under my hand and seal, this nineth day of January in the year of our Lord, one thousand nine hundred and twenty (9 Jan 1920) .......(rest cut off by copier)
Recorded in Book 5, page 408.
NOTE: It was after the above appointment of B. K. Gleaton as guardian that Curtis' grandfather, Elzy Poole, requested to be removed as guardian, saying, among other things, that Curtis had another guardian. Despite this, the Orangeburg Probate Court didn't release Elzy until after Curtis' estate from Donnie Corbitt Poole had been released to Curtis by B. K. Sutton. From what I can gather, Elzy was responsible for Curtis' father's estate, Leander Wesley Pool ($143). B. K. Gleaton was responsible for Curtis' maternal grandmother's, Sheldonia Corbitt Poole's, estate ($745.22).
