Note: 1940 U.S. Federal Census Mary Irene is 11 years old. She is living in Langley, South Carolina. Her father is deceased and her mother Lizzie Mae is head of household. Others living in the home are brothers James Robert, Leroy, Walton Ray and a sister named Bernice. Mary Irene was born in Elberton, Georgia. She was a very young child when the family moved to South Carolina. Her father died when she was 10 years old. The family was extremely poor. Mary and the family moved from house to house. When her father passed away in 1939, the family was so poor that the state had to pay for her father's funeral and grave site. In 1940, her mother (A Widower) was living in Gloverville, South Carolina. Mary was 11 years old and had three brothers and one sister. Times were tough. She never completed the 8th grade. She had to work to help support the family. She went to work at a Cotton Mill in Augusta, Georgia. Times were always tough for her family. She later meet Leander Wesley Poole when she was 18 years old. They married when she was 19 and they moved to the community of Sawyerdale, which is part of Neeses, South Carolina. Irene had her first child at the age of 21. She worked in a sewing factory while living in Sawyerdale, South Carolina. She continued to help her mother and family in whatever way she could. In 1955, Irene and her family moved back to Aiken County and close to her mother. Her husband built a home in this area. She would raise three children, see grand children and great grand children during her lifetime. Irene had so many friends. She visited them like clockwork. They knew what day of the week she was coming and usually the time of the day. She would often give them a little something. She was never a flashy dresser nor gave the appearance that she had anything of value. She was very frugal with what little money she had. Irene always had her hair down every Wednesday and at the same beauty parlor and at the same time of the day. She was very organized and liked for everyone to be punctual. On Sundays, she visited the graveyards. She had to speak to everyone. She loved rock and roll music and loved to lay in the sun in her short shorts. She was just a very loyal and good friend. However, like her mother she could be a little mean. If you made her mad, you would hear about it and she never forgot anything. One time in the 1960's, one of her son's came home with a black eye. Irene spent most of the rest of the day looking for the person who did it. It was a good thing she never found him. Irene lived a simple but good life. She and her husband fought a great deal and fussed over may things but Irene stayed the loyal wife. Lung Cancer took her early at the age of 77. It seemed like every friend that she had every knew came to the funeral. The chapel was full. You could tell that she was a loved person. She is missed by all.
