Her given name and middle initial are listed as "Opal D" in this record. -------------------- Opal Dague Winnett Opal Dague Winnett, 94, a longtime resident of Amity, died Sunday, October 29, 2006, in her home in Spring Hill, Fla. She was a homemaker and active community volunteer. She was born June 17, 1912, in the East Finley area, a daughter of Stewart and Sallie Ann Sprowls Dague. She was a 1932 Trinity High School graduate. On September 29, 1932, she married Wallace Leyda Winnett. The Winnett family grew with the arrival of Sally Ann, Jay, Mary Lee, Duane, Donna and Jon. Together with her husband, she raised her family at the foot of Amity Hill. Her husband died May 1, 1985. Together, they celebrated 53 years of marriage. She became a member of Amity Methodist Church June 3, 1931, and served on various church boards and committees throughout her life. She also was a 4-H leader, Girl Scout leader, active member of Amity Grange, Lagonda Homemakers, Washington County AARP and was county chairwoman of the Republican Party. She enjoyed sewing and crafts. Many people benefited from her knitting and crocheting of afghans and dishcloths. She took great delight in entering her handmade quilts and winning blue ribbons at the Washington County Fair. She did so until the age of 88. The quote, "Our lives are like quilts -- bits and pieces of joy and sorrow, stitched with love," was telling of her craft. She also was an avid fan of Penn State football and the Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers. In 1988, she moved to Spring Hill and enjoyed traveling around the U.S., visiting her six children, 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Surviving are her six children, Sally and husband Glee A. Duff of Fort Myers, Fla., Jay Winnett and wife Janice of Zephyrhills, Fla., Mary Lee Winnett of Spring Hill, Duane Winnett and wife Toni of Frederick, Md., Donna Guthrie and husband Michael of La Jolla, Calif., and Jon and wife Donna Winnett of Amity; 10 grandchildren, Cynthia Duff of Fort Myers, Andrew Duff of Bedford, Texas, Jodie Winnett of Chicago, Ill., Stacie Winnett Tinnucci of Mooresville, N.C., Carly Guthrie of Sonoma, Calif., Colin Guthrie of Oakland, Calif., Linda Winnett Sherwood of Wesley Chapel, Fla., Beverlee Winnett Seelig of Franschhoek, South Africa, Amanda Winnett Janovich of Washington and Megan Winnett of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a sister-in-law, Jane Dague; nieces and nephews; and five great-grandchildren, Tyler Duff, Jennifer and Jason Sherwood and Connor and Austin Tinnucci. Deceased, in addition to her parents and husband, are a sister, Ruby Haines; and a brother, Stewart Dague. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in Piatt & Barnhill Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, November 2, with the Rev. Dana Hiles officiating. Interment will be in Amity United Methodist Church Cemetery.
