 Charles "Buck' Berryhill Is
 Selected Sportsman Of Year
  By Mel Hart
The Greene County Sports Writers Association, always ready to pay homage where homage is due, has selected Charles "Buck" Berryhill, of Waynesburg, as the man who has done the most in 1950 to promote sports in Greene County. And needless to say the decision was unanimous.
Leigh Hunt's poem "Abou ben Adhem, in which he immortalizes the ideal that man's best virtue is his love for his fellow man, can well be a yardstick of measurement in the sports writers choice this year, for nowhere in the past decade has a man reached the proportions that Berryhill has accomplished for his community. If ever a person deserved signal honors in helping to build his community, Buck's name will be on the front page of the Lord's book of gold.
Back in 1947 when there was no sports program for the town's small fry, Berryhill and Raymond Gray, then a town policeman, decided to do something about the juvenile delinquency in Waynesburg. Boys were up before the juvenile courts on numerous occasions and many instances the culprits of a misdemeanor were never apprehended.
So in that year the Waynesburg Junior Football League was formed. There were only three teams in the loop and there were many boys who were still wild enough to ignore the athletic movement and band together in "gangs." Since the introduction of junior athletics in the Greene County seat, many boys have found their way into the Waynesburg High School squads. Wrestling was introduced later and is high on the winter program along with basketball. The caliber of play on the local high school teams has advanced in leaps and bounds and has cut down tremendously on the coach's labors.
Then as now Buck arises at 5 o'clock in the morning, eats breakfast and is off to the Pittsburgh area which involves a round trip of 104 miles, six days each week, 52 weeks each year. He puts in an eight hour shift as a bulldozer operator in construction work and returns to Waynesburg around 6 p. m. A quick supper and he's away to the playground to lay out the lines for the night's football game, finds referees , supply the football for the game and see to it that the game is completed with a minimum of effort and a maximum of fun.
Buck has three sons of his own, two of them playing football for the Red Raiders and the third, a freshman manager. He has a modest sports history all his own. Born and raised in Waynesburg 42 year ago he attended Waynesburg High School and because of a part time job, was unable to play football until his senior year. A compact 130-pound guard, he played on the 1927 eleven that was unbeaten and unscored upon until the final game of the season at Brownsville. The Fayette County school had power those days.
Buck tells a humorous incident in his short track career with the then Little Yellow Jackets. A half-miler, he practiced long and faithful until the day of the track meet at College Field. Due to the preponderence (sic) of events he was not scheduled to run until the following day. He went home for dinner and his mother had buckwheat cakes for the meal. Charles, (he has forgotten his first name for Buck), proceeded to consume an even dozen of the cakes and left the table in happy spirits.
But to his dismay when he reached College Field, he found that his event had been moved back for that very afternoon. Needless to say the first lap of the race was a torture and Buck finished a poor last.
The honoree makes no bones about it when he stated that "the best thing that ever happened to me was when Carolyn decided to marry me." And that marriage has resulted in a perfect union. His wife, the former Carolyn Rea of Donora, takes an active part in sports. While attending Donora Hi for two years and later at Pittsburgh Westinghouse Hi, she played on the girls basketball team. What's more! She was an avid baseball player and on many occasions took part in boys games as a short-stop.
When Buck puts on his coat enroute to the football field after supper, the dishes go into the sink and she tags along to the game where she follows each play with intense interest. Not only does she know the rules of the game but every player by his first name.
In the three years since Buck started to take an interest in Waynesburg junior athletics, the acts of juvenile delinquency has dropped to zero. In fact, due to a lack of business, the county juvenile detention home has been discontinued. The act speaks well for Berryhill's efforts. Waynesburg is indeed fortunate in having a man of Buck's caliber. He is a credit to this community and would be more than welcome in any town. People and especially parents take his efforts for granted and never show their appreciations by actions alone but you can rest assured that his work is not going unnoticed. He has carved his place in this community. Give us more such men.
