The following information is from a typewritten history of the Sprowls family, page 2, Mark and Sandra Sprowls Welsh, Claysville, Pennsylvania, September 2, 2015:
Simeon Sprowls was born the son of James Sprowls, and grandson of the pioneer John Sprowls. He was born December 13, 1822, in East Finley township and as his parents died when he was very young, leaving very little property, Simeon was obligated to begin life for himself at the age of twelve years. He worked some time without receiving wages, and was then paid the modest sum of a "levy" per day. He continued to work at whatever would afford employment, and was one of the laborers hired to assist in building the brick residence of Mr. Thomas Stout, which was erected by Issac Havly Squires. At the age of sixteen he worked several years, afterward becoming his partner. Mr. Squires finally moved to Ohio, and Mr. Sprowls continued the business. On February 25, 1848, he was united in marriage with Mary Montgomery, and the following children were born to them: Oliver M., born April 27, 1850 (living in West Finley township); Albert Squire, born July 3, 1852-died 1932 (an attorney, living in Washington, Pa.); Alexander M., born November 14, 1854-died August 18, 1859; Harvey Buchanon, born November 17, 1856-died April 29, 1934 (lived in East Finley township); Ruth Elanor, born July 3, 1859 died November 1, 1940 (she lived at home); George B., born March 5, 1862 (Hardware dealer in Claysville, Pa.); Margaret Jane, born October 17, 1864-died 1902 (Wife of Christopher Plants of Claysville, Pa.); William M., born September 9, 1867 (at home).
After his marriage Mr. Sprowls located near Prosperity, on Ten Mile Creek, where he remained a short time, and in 1850 purchased, of Samuel McQuery, a farm in East Finley township, our home place, where he lived the rest of his life. He continued to farm and follow his trade until the spring of 1874 (sic), when he was suddenly taken ill, lingering only a short time, and on June 24, 1874 (sic), passed away. At the time of his death Mr. Sprowls had extensive land possessions, having each year added to his original property by hard labor and careful economy. Politically he was a Democrat. Since the death of her husband Mrs. Sprowls has resided on the home farm, which was managed under her direction. She was a member of the Windy Gap Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
Simeon Sprowls, son of James Sprowls, born Dec. 13, 1822, died 1878 cause Typhoid fever. Granddad Simeon and son Alexander were buried in the Windy Gap burial grounds across the road from the church, near Burnsville, Pa., Washington county. At the time of Grandma Mary's death, their bodies were moved to the West Finley Cemetery beside his wife, Mary M. Sprowls, born May 13, 1828, died 1895 (sic). Death due to Cancer. They both were members of the Windy Gap Pres. Church at Burnsville, Pa., Wash. Co. Simeon and his brother James Sprowls helped build the Windy Gap Church at Burnsville.
