 HER MIND UNBALANCED
 BY BROTHER'S DEATH
  Dorcas Ann Sprowls Never Re-
 covered From Shock Sustained
 When Told That Her Brother
 Had Been Killed in Battle.
Dorcas Ann Sprowls, a native of East Finley township, but for several years a resident of Washington died yesterday morning at the home of James R. Wright, in the Eighth ward, where she had been living for the past two years.
Miss Sprowls for many years lived on South Main street, in a property formerly owned by the Bradys, a few doors below Maiden street, on the west side of the street. The property is now owned by Dr. McCullough.
Miss Sprowls was aged 75 years. She was the daughter of William and Dorcas Towne Sprowls, former residents of East Finley township, but deceased for many years. Her father was a member of the well known Sprowls family of this county. Miss Sprowls was one of a large number of children and her death removes the last one of the family.
Miss Sprowls' life story is pathetic one. She had three brothers, Cyrus, Henry C. and John, who went to the front at the breaking out of the Civil war. Cyrus was the youngest child and the baby of the family. It was a sad day in the Sprowls home when these sons went away, and the mother and sisters were greatly depressed. In one of the early battles of the war, Cyrus, the baby, was killed. The shock was too much for the mother and two of the sisters, Dorcas Ann and Elizabeth. Their minds gave way and mother and sisters were never the same again. It was always a harmless dementia, but their expression and manner always betrayed the vacant mind, with reason dethroned. Miss Sprowls persisted to the last in the style of dress common two generations ago. The case calls to mind the sea-side tragedy of "Hannah at the Window Binding Shoes."
John, another of the brothers, was a member of an Illinois regiment. He rose to be commander of his regiment, but near the close of the war died from wounds and exposure. The third brother, Henry C., was a member of the well-known 140th Pennsylvania command. He survived the war, dying eight or ten years ago.
In her younger days, Dorcas Ann Sprowls was a bright, intelligent young woman, as was her sister, Elizabeth. Dorcas Ann came to Washington with her sister, Elizabeth, in 1876. The two sisters lived together until the death of Elizabeth in 1890. Miss Dorcas then lived alone for some time, but on account of her declining health, relatives made arrangements to have her live elsewhere and since that time she has been at the Wright home. Miss Sprowls has a number of nieces and nephews hereabouts. Funeral services will be held this afternoon frm (sic) the Wright home, at 3 o'clock. The interment will be private later, in the Washington cemetery.
