Ruth Virginia Sprowls Stagg, 102, of Washington, formerly of Thomas Campbell Apartments and South Franklin Township, died Wednesday, August 10, 2011, in Southmont of Presbyterian SeniorCare, Washington.
She was born November 1, 1908, in West Finley, a daughter of Thomas B. and Rebecca Jane Ealy Sprowls.
Mrs. Stagg was a member of Claysville Baptist Church, where she participated in the Rainbow Class for more than 60 years.
A homemaker, she enjoyed sewing, playing the harmonica and organ and doing crossword puzzles.
Mrs. Stagg was an accomplished speller and could spell any word you gave her backward.
She was known as a loving and caring person and will be missed by many.
Mrs. Stagg was a member of McGuffey Senior Citizens, where she had been the treasurer for 27 years.
On January 1 (NOTE: THE DAY OF MARRIAGE CONFLICTS WITH INFORMATION FOUND IN ANOTHER SOURCE), 1947, in Claysville, she married Lester D. Stagg, who died October 17 (NOTE: THE DAY OF DEATH CONFLICTS WITH INFORMATION FOUND IN OTHER SOURCES), 1972.
She was previously married to Russell Holmes, who is deceased.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Carl A. (Vicki) Tustin and Evelyn Humphreys, both of Washington; a stepson, Ronald Stagg of Bradenton, Fla.; two stepdaughters, Dorothy Decker of Davie, Fla., and Barbara Faurote of Wallkill, N.Y.; three grandchildren, William Carl Tustin, Robert R. Humphreys and Cynthia Ackmann; 10 stepgrandchildren; five great-grandchildren; 25 stepgreat-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; and several special nieces and nephews.
Deceased are four brothers, Clarence, Herschel, Earl and Wray Sprowls; two sisters, Wilda Miller and Mabel Kilgore; and a stepson, Lester Stagg.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, August 13, in Claysville Baptist Church, with Pastor James Sevon officiating. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Claysville Baptist Church. Private interment was held in Enon Cemetery, Richhill Township. Arrangements were handled by Michael H. Heinrich.
