 53 Years In One Job
WAYNESBURG - In many occupations these days, a person can retire and receive a nice pension after 20-years service.
But don't tell Estella Berryhill Hatfield at Baily's Insurance Agency in Waynesburg. She has been employed at Baily's for the past 53 years, more than double the time many persons spend at their job.
Estella, a no-nonsense clerk, has worked during her long career with the firm which was founded in 1902 by Harry and William Bailey.
Following graduation from Waynesburg High School, she was briefly employed in a hospital fund drive and was making plans to join her father in South America, where he was employed by Standard Oil Company.
Instead, she decided to attend Waynesburg College and spent three semesters there until she was approached by William Baily to replace one of his secretaries who was leaving. She was hired in April 1927 and has been a "fixture" in the South Washington Street office ever since.
A daughter of Albert and Alice Berryhill, she was born in East Brady but has spent most of her life in Waynesburg. Her father served as police chief in Waynesburg for many years.
When asked if today's insurance agents are any better or worse, Estella said, "They are just as good today as they were years ago. This has always been a stable agency and we can attribute much of that to the fact we have very little turn-over in this office."
Estella was married in 1952 to Richard Hatfield who died September 5, 1980. Her husband , who served as court crier, was better known as the public-address announcer for Waynesburg College and Waynesburg High School sports events.
She makes her home at 277 Hillcrest Avenue in Waynesburg.
