 TRIBUTE OF RESPECT
The following tribute of respect was adopted by Waynesburg Lodge No. 469 I. O. O. F. at a regular session Tuesday evening, July 12, 1904.
The irrepressible messenger of death has invaded our ranks once again and Brother Levi Porter sleeps the sleep that knows no waking. During the evening hours of July 2, 1904, the spirit fluttered out from its tenement of clay as a bird flies away from its prison cage, A few short weeks ago he sat with us in the Lodge Hall, today his mortality slumbers in the grave. He has passed beyond the swelling waters, and let us hope his spirit rests in peace. We can but realize that "Death ride on every passing breeze and lurks in every flower."
Life and death are enigmas. Mortality and immortality united are mysteries inexplicable. We are in our bodies as worms of the dust. Yet in our spirits made in the image of the King eternal. We are the essence of weakness, yet even the elements are harnessed and the laws of nature do our bidding. But the hour of dissolution will come for us as it has come for Brother Porter. We must all sooner or later take our place with "that innumerable caravan that moves to that mysterious realm where each shall take his chamber in the silent halls of death." But may we all approach our graves like "one that draws the drapery of his couch around him and lies down to pleasant dreams."
Our deceased brother was a good citizen, an affectionate husband and an indulgent father. His death makes a void in a once happy home that never can be filled and it becomes our duty as Odd Fellows to keep a watchful eye over the bereaved and warn and shield them if dangers should come. Our Brother has passed behind the veil. He is not dead. The light of his life has not been put out. It is but hid for the moment behind the gloomy shadow we call death to reappear in immortality, we will ever fondly cherish and revere his memory.
"The star is not extinguished when it sets
Upon the dull horizon; but it goes
To shine in other skies, then reappear
In ours, as ? as when it first arose."

 Harvey Call,
 W. V. Hutchins,
