As a H.S. graduate she worked as a stenographer in Toledo and Washington, D.C. until marriage. She chose that over an offer to teach English in a mission station in Alexandria, Egypt. She was active in the First Baptist Church. She wrote good prose and poetry and had a few writings published in various magazines. A fun-loving person with a keen wit and a "practical joker" she was popular at parties, in spite of poor health most of her life. She instilled in her children an intense interest in reading, and a trait of inquisitive curiosity that all of her children continue to have.
