Note: n (http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=smj). The son of Anthony and Hannah Deroche, Benjamin was one of a family of six children, and one of three boy triplets. He came to Bay City, Michigan from Canada in 1871. He obtained work in the lumber mills, and stayed there two years after which he moved to Standish, Michigan where he made his home until 1877. That year, he and his brother Homer walked from Standish to Alabaster expecting to catch the steamer Mason, or Cityof Cleveland, to Crawford's Quarry, now the Port of Calcite. Due to the ice on the lake, the boats were unable to run and instead of waiting for the lake to open they decided to walk to Presque Isle County. The trip took them ten days and they arrived on Easter Sunday, 1877. Benjamin told of trapping in his youth on Benson's Lake near Newborough, Ontario with a man who had deserted the Union Army during the Civil War. He purchased land in Presque Isle County, three miles north of Posen, from his brother James. He cleared the land and made his farm on which he lived for forty years. At age 73 he gave up farming and went to live with his daughter Elsie and her husband Alph Richardson in Rogers City. ________________________________________________ 1870 US Federal Census (from www.ancestry.com) "Homer Derush"; age 22 at last birthday; estimated birth year - 1847;born in Canada; both father and mother of foreign birth; occupation:laborer "Benjamine Derush"; age 16 at last birthday; estimated birth year - 1843;born in Canada; both father and mother of foreign birth; occupation:laborer "Mary J Derush"; age 17 at last birthday; estimated birth year - 1852;born in Canada; both father and mother of foreign birth; keeps house "Anner Derush", age 55 at last birthday; estimated birth year - 1814;born in Canada; both father and mother of foreign birth; at home Home in 1870 (June 1): Zilwaukee, Saginaw, Michigan Post Office: Bridgeport Source: Roll: M593_702 Page: 513 Image: 506 Census taken 5th day of?Sry?, 1870 Also in the 1870 US Federal Census - at a different location in Michigan- Benjamin Deroche's brother??
