Mary Elizabeth McCormick b February 16, 1871 Clinton Township, DeKalb County, IL. d March 16, 1964 DeKalb, IL Held the position of US Postmaster in Shabbona, IL, in the early 1900's (1910) when she was in her early 30's. After the arrival of the US Mail by train (a mail bag was "hooked" at the depot as the train flew through town), she would announce to the town of Shabbona the readiness of the day's mail (having been sorted by her) by blowing on her homemade horn. She purchased a small rocking chair with a cane seat with some of her first wages. Never married. Lived with several of her Sisters over the years, including Julia McCormick Griffin while living in DeKalb, IL, in a Servant's Quarters house (converted to apartments) on the Jacob Haish home property, NW corner of Fisk and North Third Streets, one block north of where their Uncle Thomas McCormick had lived which is now the present location of the DeKalb Public Library.
