Notes
a. Note:   Letters from Charlotte to her sister Merilla Lett: Iowa Centre December 17th, 1855
  Dear Sister and Brother
We received your letter the 16 and was glad to hear from you and the rest. You wrote you had wrote three letters. Merilla, I have only received one before this. I have sent as many as one dozen letters since I left. Lois has wrote more than all the rest. I don't remember how many I have received from her. We are all well at present. All the complaints we have hear is crossness and it is a very easy thing to get along with. Our house is very small. Only one room and that bout as large as your kitchen and three beds in that with all the rest and eight of us all the time so you may think about how I get along but I live in hope that I shall have more room in the corse of another year if we live. But I don't know if I can stand it until that time at this poor rate. Every thing is so unhandy hear now that it makes it harder than it would be. But Merilla you said you did not know but Thomas would be our neighbors now Merilla I will tell you what I think about that. Every one that has a home there had better stay for they have lived through the hardest of it and got so they can live now and take some comfort. And now to come out here they have the same to go through with again and buy the time they get as well off as they was when they left Illinois they would not want a home but any one that has not got a home. I think this is the place for them if anyone is able to buy a farm second hand they can do first rate. Merilla you wanted mo to explain to you what I meant. Now I will tell you. I found a little chap that wanted a great deal worse than I did and so I gave them to him now I have explain it, Merilla. I like this country first rate but it is very lonesome for me to live away from all friend and deprived of all priviledg what ever. But I hope I shall see better time before I die but I don’t know if I shall.
Now I will write a few lines about business matters. I want Thomas to send the money if he has received the money from Mr. Hughs on then receipt I sent back. Father wrote to me and said Mr Hughs told him that if I would send them so they would get there in time I would get the money back I paid out. I thought if he had the good luck to get it I should like it if not I want you should write and let me know whither Thomas received it or not. If he did Thomas may send it the money Thomas receive don the day opf the sale. I want him to keep that ntil I send hij the word what to do with it. There is no land I can get here for the children and ny the time the money is due there will be no chance for them here. I think now when the rest of the money is due I will put it all together and see wht it will do. Write ands let me know what you think about it. I have wrote to Lois and David to see that they think of coming out here and if they come out they will let me know and then I can tell you about sending the money but remember not to brake into that 1,400 hundred and 28 dollars that I want keep in one body by it self. I want that I to go and come on when the rail road gets to Newton than I shall make my first on rail road for home and then I shall take the world easy for I have ben through the mill once and by the time I go through it the second time I think I ought to take things easy but enough if this. I feal sometimes as though I had not a friend in this world for I have not seen or spoke to a woman in three months. We have neighbors but I have no time to go. No one to do anything but myself. We have no school for the children to go to. Thare is no school within three miles of us and that is too far to send so I think I shall have to send to Illinois if they ever get any schooling. Merilla I must stop for my pen is not a cent that you can give me. Give my respects to all.
This is from your sister, Charlotte, Phillips, Merilla, Lett
Answer this as soon as you can and let me know all about things that concerns me. Merilla I only want one hundred dollars sent to me. The rest I want to keep out at interest. I want Thomas to do the best he can with it. Merilla I expect you wil think this all sorts of a letter but I feel just so I get the gout every little while and it was on me when I wrote this letter but it began to ware off but you must excuse it you must consider where it come from like the man when the jackass kick him. I have wrote foolry enough.
John M Blanchard left us Saturday the 15 for home and what I have not wrote he can tell.

Give you one half the proceeds of three Lots in North Ottawa 6. 7 in Block 5 Lot & in Block 8, if you will pay the back taxes. Dispose of them at whatever price you can. You shall be entitled to the above offer. Situate as I am I can do nothing with them. They will go for tax if not attended to soon. I have been sowing wheat but froze up last night under a cold north wind. If you can do anything write me. I will send you the necessary papers.
Merilla, I have been very homesick since you and Mother and Father were here. I wish I could come home once more if only for one day. Alas I am afraid my fate is seald. Give my love to all.

Merilla about the money I will give you the dates as near as I can. I thought you would do that and all I to go by is your letters. Henry will figure it up as near as he can and Thomas do the same and then you can see what the differace will be. I want part for George and Lotty. They must go to school one year stedy. I thought if you was willing I would let them come to Illinois this fall and stay one year if you will let them stay with you. I can get them to come. George and Lotty can work for you or any one els when there is no school and Lotty the same if you think they had better come. I should like to have you keep part of the money for their use.
