Note: Memphis Democrat, Wednesday, May 17, 1911 Thomas S. Rowell Dead It is our sad duty this week to chronicle the death of Thomas S (Uncle Tom) Rowell on Thursday of last week at his home at Newlin. Mr. Rowell had been in feeble health for some time, but up to 2 weeks ago his condition was not considered dangerous, but the death angel came and claimed his as his own on Thursday, May 11, 1911. Mr. Rowell was born in Georgia on March 23, 1837. He was married in 1862 to Miss Nancy Mays and came to Texas 41 years ago, moved to Newlin, Hall Co., 21 years ago where he and his family have lived continuously since that time. He joined the Lutheran church and then the Methodist of which he served as an active member until his death. Twenty-five grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, 1 brother and 1 sister all of whom were present at the funeral. He was 74 years, 1 month, and 13 days old at his death. Just before he died he called all his children around him to talk and arranged his business affairs, and his last words were expressive of peace in God and a willingness to depart and be at rest with him, and that he wanted them all to meet him in heaven. His cheerful, helpful life; his devotion to his family and kindness to everybody will long linger as a fragrant memory in the home which his presence brightened and which death has now darkened. The funeral services were held at the Newlin church Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock by Rev. S.J. Upton, of Lakeview who paid the deceased a beautiful tribute to his living memory. From the beauty of his life let us all take an inspiration and go forth to live as he lived, so that when the summons comes to you may say as he did, "All is well.ยดยด The funeral services were under the auspices of the Blue Lodge and Knights Templar and Odd Fellows of which orders he was a dearly beloved member. There were some 30 or 40 Masons from Memphis in attendance at the funeral and it is said by those attending to be one of the longest funeral processions over in Hall Co.. The remains were tenderly laid away in their last resting place by the Masonic Order Friday afternoon in the Newlin Cemetery. To the bereaved ones we extend our heart-felt sympathy in this sad hour.
