Note: Last Will & Testament of James Steel Recorded January 5th 1824 Maury Co., Tennessee In the name of God, Amen, Knowing that man is born to die, I, James Steel, now am in a low state of health, but in sound mind, FIRST, I wish to be decently buried and for what property it has pleased God to bestow on me, it is my wish and desire to bestow in the following form and manner, FIRST, I want all my just debts to be paid, SECONDLY, it is my will and desire that my beloved wife, Hannah to have a Negro woman by the name of Fernetoe, to be her property during her widowhood, then to be sold and equally divided amongst all my children, also one third part of all my cleared and wooded lands. She is to have the use of during her widowhood, also one gray mare known by the name of Pidgeon, also two cows and as much of the household and kitchen furniture, as she can make out with, after her death, then to be sold and equally divided amongst all my children. I give and bequeath to my son James Steel all my land lying on Silver Creek, in Maury Co., supposed to be about Twenty Five acres, with exception of the above, that my beloved wife is to have the use of, One Third part of the cleared lands and One Third part of the wood lands, during her widowhood, then to belong to the said James Steel and his heirs forever by his paying One Hundred and Fifty Dollars to my Executors, in Twelve months after the death of my beloved wife, also to have One cow and calf, One feather bed and furniture, One gray horse known by the name of Liberty, that he has now in his possession. I give and bequeath to my daughter Rachel Steel, One gray horse, known by the name of Charley, One feather bed and furniture. It is my will and desire that my Executors out of the sale of my Chattel property, to pay to my daughter, Jane Scott, Fifty Dollars, also to my daughter Ester Scott, Fifty Dollars, also to my daughter, Rachel Steel, Fifty Dollars, and I give and bequeath to my Granddaughter, Betsy S. McNutt, the daughter of my daughter of Elizabeth, deceased, as follows, One featherbed and furniture, One chest, One oven and One pan, One set of knives and forks, One set of plates, Three bowls, One pig, which property as above given will make my heirs all equal as heretofore given. Should any property remain, it is my will that it should be equally divided amongst all my children to wit, Nathaniel H. Steel, Aaron Steel, William Steel, and James Steel, Jane Scott, Ester Scott and Rachel Steel. I do appoint and authorize Nathaniel H. Steel and Aaron Steel to be my lawful Executors annulling all other wills whatsoever. Whereunto I set my hand and affix my seal this the 30th day of June and in the year of our Lord 1823.
