Note: Twin brother of Jane Ann. Born in the mill house at Stakesby Mill, the address of which was variously given as "High Stakesby", "Stakesby Fields", "Factory Fields", "Bagdale" and "Ruswarp" in census returns and other sources. 'Family Folklore' had it that Thomas died "of a broken heart" shortly after his wife Emma. He did indeed die within six weeks of his wife but he actually died of rheumatic fever, and was staying with one of his brothers (Robert Burnett) at Warter near Pocklington at the time. His son William George Burnett, of 81 Church St. , Whitby, registered the death. Thomas's body was taken back to Whitby for burial. The burial is recorded in the register of Larpool Cemetery as being grave #8362, class yellow. Wife Emma was buried in the same grave, as was an infant, Frank Burnett, who died Jane. 23, 1895. Unfortunately, the grave is not marked by a headstone. The National Probate Index contains the following: Thomas Burnett, died 4-9-1904, manager of fruit and provisions merchants, of 81 Church St., Whitby. Sole executor William George Burnett, also manager of fruit and provisions merchants. Effects 222 Pounds.18shillings.6d-administration granted at York 4-25-1904. The "Admon" shows that Thomas died intestate and that "Letters of Administration" were granted to William George Burnett of 81 Church St., Whitby, under surety of Thomas Edward Burnett of Sandgate, Whitby, butcher, and John Ditchburn of Whitby, Grocer. William George later took over his father's job as manager at Edward's grocery store. Thomas Edward Burnett, the butcher, went on to marry Kate Ditchburn-presumably the daughter of the above grocer John Ditchburn. [BURNETT Picture.ged.FTW] Twin brother of Jane Ann.
