Notes
a. Note:   John Kinard Bluer, planter and merchant, operated a general store near Oakley, SC where he sold farm equipment, supplies, etc. A slight limp, the result of a fall from a horse during childhood, prevented his enlisting in the Confederate Army;
 but he concentrated his energies wholdeheartedly in the defense of the Condederacy. It is said that his store was thrown open to suffering soldiers and needy families, and that as long as the supplies lasted, he charged them to members of the
 community never cutting off their credit for non payment. He lost his only brother in the war. The end of the war found him broke with the exception of a shoe box full of confederate money (which later passed to his youngest daughter and was
 lost in a fire that destroyed her home many years later). However, with the payment of some accounts receivable, he managed to keep his business open on a small scale until his death 7 years later at age 48.
