a. Note:   George Sr. was a corn miller and at the time of George Jr.s' birth was working at the Union Mill at Flowergate Cross-Whitby-within walking distance of home at Clarence Place. George worked in various mills in the Whitby area until his retirement in 1898 at the age of 74 yrs. He was the ninth of sixteenth children born to his father John Jr.
 1841 census-servant at Dale House Mill, Hinderwell
 1851 census-Journeyman miller living at Clarence Place,Whitby, where it is known George became "foreman in charge of milling operations" at about this time.
 1861 census-Tenant miller at Wren's Mill, Stakesby/Factory Fields, Ruswarp
 1871,1881, & 1891 censuses-Miller and farmer at Hawsker Mill, Whitby.
  George purchased two cottages with land at Hawsker in 1861. In 1863 a "memorial of an indenture" was entered in the deeds register at Northallerton, indicating that George had built a "wind corn mill" and a new "dwelling house" on the land.
 This was the mill which became known as Hawsker Mill and it was not the mill which was listed in earlier Trade Directories for Whitby as being operated by a miller named Henderson. Mr. Henderson's mill was at Stainsacre.
 George was buried in the same grave as his wife Mary who died 15 yrs. before him. The burial is recorded in grave #8519 at Larpool Cemetery, Whitby. The headstone also remembers daughter Jane Ann and son James, as well as two infant children
 buried in St. Mary's churchyard.
 1916 Probate Index: George Burnett of Whitby died 28 Dec. 1915. Probate granted at York 28 Jan. 1916 to Robert Burnett, gardner, and Joseph Burnett, rigger. Effects 383.17.7 pounds.
