Notes
a. Note:   William Smith/Burnett was illegitimate; his father was not named on his birth certificate; He was baptised as William Smith. However, he is recorded in the census of 1851 as the son of George Burnett. He spent at least eight years in Ireland
between 1865 and 1875 and then returned to England with his wife and family.
 [BURNETT Picture.ged.FTW]
Baptised as William SMITH, mother's name Mary SMITH - his father was not
named in the baptism register. The "informant" who registered William's
birth was Christopher SMITH - his relationship to William was not given
but he was without doubt the father of Mary. William's father was not
named on the birth certificate either.
1851 census: William was recorded as the son of George BURNETT and was
living with George and his family in Whitby. It is however doubtful
that George BURNETT was William's father - George was only 17yrs old at
the time of William's birth in 1841 and was working at Dale House Mill
 near Staithes.
1881 census: A William BURNETT, age 42yrs, born Whitby, was living in
Middlesbrough. His wife Mary was born in Ireland as were the first three
of their five children. Their first child was a girl named Mary J.
BURNETT in the census return - possibly Mary Jane? The second child was
a boy named George BURNETT. The names given to these children and the
age and birthplace of their father, all point to this being William
 SMITH/BURNETT above.[BURNETT England.FTW]
