Note: After moving to Andrews in 1927, member of Andrews Baptist Church and charter member of the Daughters of America. She moved to Georgetown in 1943, after the death of her husband, to live with her eldest daughter Dorothy Mae. Source - obituary in The State (Columbia, SC newspaper 12/28/1957). Mattie Avant Tompkin's mother Margaret Adriel Carter died when Mattie was very sick and no one told Mattie because they wanted to wait until after she was getting better. Junie came into Mattie's room with crepe on his hat, an indication of mourning in those days, and Mattie wanted to know why. When she asked him he just left the room. Also during the time Mattie was recuperating, she requested her Momma's cornbread. Someone else made the cornbread, Mattie tasted one bite and said "This is not my momma's cornbread". She knew something was very wrong so Poppa (James Gordon Avant) had to tell her. Source - Olive Tompkins Hall 12.25.98 Mattie raised as a Methodist but became Baptist and attended Mt. Zion Baptist with her husband. Buried at Good Hope Methodist along with James Harley Tompkins - need to check if any surviving church records. Mattie sewed and tatted. Surviving piece of her tatting work held by Olive (photo in scrapbook). Her great granddaughter (Carol R.) has her old tatting shuttle. Her son, James Guthrie Tompkins, said she made the best biscuits.
