a. Note:   1841 census:living and working in Middlesbrough. Two of his children were staying with his father-in-law, Thomas Bradely, in Yearby, Kirkleatham.
 1851 census: working as an ag.lab and living in Kirkleatham with wife Mary and six children, two of whom were born in Middlesbrough, one in Lythe, one in Easington, and the others in Kirkleatham.
 1881 census: living in Loftus with son John and John' family. Philip gave his birthplace as Moorsholm but in all other censuses he gave his birthplace as Danby; and in each one the given age is consistent with a birthdate in 1811.
 Philip obviously moved aroung; settling wherever dhe could get work.
