Note: Note: Gunsmith, who manufactured guns at the Augusta Gun factory during the War between the States. AWOL many times during the war: so much so, his daughter, Mattie Bruce Clark would not ask for membership in the United Daughters of the Confederacy because it was an embarrassment to her. One of his AWOL times coincided with the birth of his son, Edward, so perhaps he felt he was needed at home more than making guns for the war. War Between the States record: Co D, 1st Local Troops, GA Inf., Augusta, GA Pvt. age 34 enlisted Jan. 20, 1864 Augusta by Capt. W. T. Gould for duration. August 15, 1863 - Feb.29, 1864 roster absent without leave. Transferred from Augusta Gun Factory March-April 1864 AWOL May & June 1964 Turned over to enrolling officer May & June 1864 Co. B Assigned to this company 29 Jun, 1864. Birth date from census and war records indicates he was born about 1831, but parents were not married until 1833! Could he have been a child from an earlier marriage? His mother was 3 years older than his father, so she could have been married before George Osborn Bruce. This is probably a mistake on the marriage date of his parents, since Phoebe was quite elderly when she gave the date on her pension request, and she was unable to read or write. I believe they were actually married in 1830. The Atlanta Constitution, 16 March 1887 From the Sparta, Ga., Ishmaelite A moderate state of excitement still prevails on the mad dog question. On Saturday monring a large brindle cur, evidently mad, attacked Mr. S. C. Shivers in his yard and came near biting him. He saved himself by striking the rabid cur on the head with a stick. The dog after recovering from the blow, came on towards town, and put in its next work at Mr. Terrell Bruce's. There it attacked the yard dog and tore it so that Mr. Bruce had it killed. Where it wnet from that point is not known, but it probably bit other dogs in town. . . . .This business is getting to be dangerously monotonous. Dogs are nuisances even when sound in mind and body, but under present conditions the fellow that wants to have them around him seems to be somewhat foolhardy. Keep an eye on all roving dogs. They are certainly harmless only when dead. 1 Birth: JUL 1831 in Woodstock, Cherokee Co., Georgia 2 Death: AFT 1910 in Sparta, Hancock Co., Georgia Burial: Sparta City Cemetery, Sparta, Hancock Co., Georgia Father: George Osborn BRUCE b: 2 AUG 1809 in Wolf Creek, Pendleton Dist., Pickens Co., South Carolina Mother: Phoebe KUYKENDALL b: 15 NOV 1806 in Buncombe Co., North Carolina Marriage 1 Martha Rebecca THIGPEN b: MAR 1831 in Wrens, Jefferson Co., Georgia Married: 16 MAY 1852 in Long Shoals, Greene Co., Georgia 3 Census: 1910 in Americus, Sumter Co., Georgia Note: In 1910 Census, living with daughter Mattie and her family.
