In reply, I received a letter from them along with a copy of the following petition: Harry J. Clarke, a native of England, requesting citizenship of the U.S. on Sept. 8th, 1880. He declared to the court that he arrived in the Port of Portland (Maine??) in the year 1860 and at that time he was under 18 years old. He has resided in the U.S. since that time and is and has been his intention to become a citizen of the U.S. renouncing forever all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign Prince, Potentate, State or Sovereignty and particularly the Queen of Great Brittain and Ireland of whom he was at that time a subject. That he has resided in the U.S. upwards of five years and one year in the State of Pa. The petition is signed by Harry J. Clarke, 1002 Lombard St. and witnessed by William Moran of 1515 Vine St. who also vouched for Harry J. Clarke as a man of good moral character, attached to the principles of the Constitution of the U.S. and well disposed to the good order and happiness of same. Sworn in open court before Thomas W. Simpson, Pro Prothonotary. In the letter from the City Archives of Philadelphia that accompanied this petition, they stated that although the immigration date does not match the one shown on the 1900 census, this is the only Harry Clarke listed as being naturalized in Philadelphia for the years from 1794 to 1904.
