 JOSEPH LEO ANDERSON
 January 11,1922-October 28, 2003
Joseph Leo Anderson: 1922 - 2003. The dates are not as important as the "dash" in-between those dates the "dash" represents Joe's life.
You may ask who was he? Did he achieve his goals in life? Was he successful? The testament to Joe's success is sitting in this CHURCH today. That so many of us have gathered to celebrate his life speaks volumes about Joe and his
 achievements.
This week many hours were spent, by his wife, Bernie; his children: Margaret, Joanne, Agnes, Tommy and other family members, looking through pictures of Joe's journey through life this is what was found:
Joe was a kind and helpful Son,
 a Loving Husband,
 a Devoted and adoring Father,
an Accepting and fair minded Father-in-law,
 a Caring Grandfather,
 a Son-in-law,
 a Super Great Grandfather,
 a Brother,
 a Brother-in-law,
 an Uncle,
 a Cousin,
 a True Friend,
 a Great Neighbor,
a Teacher to anyone who needed direction,
and a Student of life and learning - he always had a book with him to read especially when "the girls" would stop for a few minutes to shop (that few minutes often turned into an hour or more!)
Back in the 1940's when Bernie and Joe started to raise their family their goals were simple and clear. They wanted to raise healthy, happy, productive children who would learn how to use tools to overcome the hurdles that life would put in
their way. They taught their children to grow, to love their families and their country and to be independent productive adults.
Joe was the kind of father / grandfather, that as a child or an adult, you could go to for advice or for an understanding ear. He was someone that would listen. He was someone that would allow you to find your own way, but was ready to catch
 you if you stumbled.
Joe was a man of many talents. He was the only man I ever knew who could fix "ANYTHING". Nothing was ever too much trouble for Joe. He was there when you needed him whether you were a family member, a friend or a colleague.
Joe loved to work. He wouldn't let a day go by without trying to make some improvement. He always had a tool at his ready. Whether it was a hammer, saw or a kind and understanding word.
So, looking back on Joe's Life! It is clear to anyone who knew him that he was extremely successful.
He may not have been a millionaire but wealth is not measured by dollars alone. His accomplishments are much more important than any amount of money. They are priceless!
Like his name-sake ST. Joseph, Joe was a:
 Successful Carpenter!
 Successful Man!
 Successful Father!
 Successful Husband!
 Successful Friend!
Joe leaves a huge footprint in the sand that will continue to grow for generations to come.
We will be forever grateful for the gifts, the skills, the tools and the love Joe gave to all of us who crossed his path.
Like the lighthouses he so enjoyed, Joe will stand as a beacon in the lives of the people he loved, and who loved him.
This eulogy would not be complete without knowing that Bernie and Joe were married for 61 happy years. Joe was a devoted employee of the Merion Cricket Club in Haverford for 40 years and retired at 80 years of age. He loved building, fixing
and sailing boats and had many exciting tales to tell about some of his experiences on the waterways. I always enjoyed listening to Joe's stories.
He enjoyed all types of trips on land, sea and in the sky. His favorite trips were usually unplanned and nicknamed "lost weekends". His children would say "Pop come on lets go for a ride. They would pile in the car and off they would go,
only God knew where they would end up.
Over the years Joe visited almost every lighthouse on the east coast from Florida to Nova Scotia, each one had something unique and special that Joe liked about them.
In recent years Joe's love of being near, watching and listening to the Ocean increased. He continued to always be ready to go for a ride around the corner, to Norwood, north to New Hampshire and south to South Carolina and the beautiful blue
 Oceans.
Just a week ago Sunday his daughter Margaret Ann took him to Delaware to one of his favorite stores and pushed him around the entire store so he could look at all of the Christmas displays. He really enjoyed seeing all of the beautiful trees
and decorations and felt like Santa in his sleigh as he toured this winter wonderland. As long as there is Christmas, Joe will always be with us.
Not so long ago I came across a poem. For some strange reason I wrote down a few lines of the poemI find these lines to be an appropriate way to say good- bye to one of the most caring, kindest, helpful friends anyone could have had. "If you
must bury something let it be my faults, my weaknesses and my prejudice against my fellow man.
Give my sins to the devil. Give my soul to God.
If by chance you wish to remember me,
Do it with a kind deed or kind word to someone who needs it.
If you do these simple things I ask, I will live forever."
I was blessed with the friendship of Joe and his wonderful family and I thank God for putting them in my life.
May knowing that Joe is safely home in the loving embrace of his heavenly Father be a constant comfort to those he loved.
We love you PAPA Joe. You will be sadly missed and forever in our hearts.
