  J. Gary Smoak, in a statement notarized on 23 Jan 1892, stated that John Samuel Smoak, "the son of William Smoak, Sr. stayed and lived with his grandparents". According to May Lane (Smoak) Grist,
John Samuel Smoak had dark red hair and beautiful blue (dutch) eyes. After moving from South Carolina to Georgia, John Samuel Smoak owned 300 acres of land eight miles from Dalton. The family would move back to South Carolina during the winter
season. Compiler's Aunt Blanche was told that "Annie Margaret was woefully dissatisfied to live in Whitfield County as the northern army came so close they could hear the noise of the cannon". After the death of Anna Margaret in 1863, John
Samuel Smoak moved with the Zant family to Dooley Co., GA (John Samuel Smoak's daughter, Margaret Eliza (Marza), had married John Solomon Zant in December 1859. --- During the summer of 1887, John Samuel was 'crippled' by being drug off his
mule by a limb of an oak tree. In October 1899, he was sitting on the back porch when one of his g grandchildren, a toddler, fell off the porch. As he jumped to catch the baby, he fell down the steps, breaking his hip. From then on he was
bedridden, never recovering from the injury. He died a year later. A granddaughter, May Lane (Smoak) Grist told compiler's Aunt Blanche, "They tell many grand things about him; every word is of praise". ---- from the files of Janet (Weir)
