Note: George was born on 11-14-1851 at Clarence Place, Whitby. This was in the West Cliff area of Whitby and for administrative purposes (eg.census enumeration) was part of the parish of Ruswarp. He was baptised on 12-13-1851 at one of the Methodist chapels in the Whitby Methodist circuit-probably the closest chapel to Clarence Place. George was the fifth of twelve children; including three sets of twins, of his parents George Burnett Sr. and Mary Smith. The 1881 census shows George and Maria Burnett living in Falling Foss, Sneaton ( which is ). The census shows that George was born in Whitby and was a farm labourer and Maria was born in Briggswathe. The two children on the census (John H and George R were born in Falling Foss). George Burnettt and his wife Maria lived on Falling Foss Farm where George raised pheasants for the owner of the farm who owned the estate on which the farm was situated. Obviously Uncle Albert learned a lot from his dad during that time. There are two George and Mary Burnetts who would fit in approximately with George Snrs age. The most likely candidates are at Green Gate, Hawsker Cum Stainsacre with this George being born in Lofthouse (aged 68 in 1881 census) and his wife Mary having been born in Goathland ( near Whitby) aged 60. They were corn millers and there was nobody else at the address at the time of the census. There were very few Yeomans in Yorkshire in the 1881 census and no trace of a Rachel of an appropriate age. Almost all of the info that we have on George Burnett and his ancestors came from Frank's third cousin, William Edward Burnett, who is an avid geneologist, and was kind enough to share his info with us.
