Note: IGI index shows the following: Maria Yeoman-born 5-10-1807 in Lythe, Yorkshire, England. Parents: Thomas Yeoman and Eleanor unknown Batch #CO49572 1769-1837 1851 Census-England-Maria Yeoman-age 42-born in Barnby, folio 573 Email from Beverly Yeoman Glover: [email protected] Iso Yeoman family: My gr gr gr grandfather was called James Alderson, a farmer of Briggswarth, Ruswarp and he had two sons: Henry and Francis to his housekeeper, Maria. Unfortunately, they never married and I understand that Maria's family refused to have anything else to do with her. I have no info earlier than James and Maria. I know nothing about Henry (suspecting that he died young) but I do know that Francis married an Ann Smith on 7-16-1866 and they had seven children. We are connected with the Young family from Fryup two-fold: John and Betty Young's son Martin maried Ann Yeoman, and his sister Sarah (Sally) married my great-grandfather. Whitby Museum Archive records show the following: Baptised 6-22-1829 Henry Yeoman illegitimate son of Maria Yeoman, Briggswath, Spinster, born 6-11-1829 in St. Mary's Parish Church, Whitby. English Churches often have stained glass windows. Generally showing Biblical scenes but some modern ones are more contemporary. Some of these windows are centuries old. We lost a lot at the time of the civil war when the puritans cleaned out a lot of the "idolatry" in churches. That is our civil war which was about 1620 to 1650 if I remember right. Now the church at Aislaby presumably had plain glass windows and the Yeoman family, being very rich, paid for some fancy stained ones from London and down along the bottom they put the wording which I sent to you. The Gravestones may be gone in another hundred years but the windows might be there for a thousand. A folio is a sheet of paper which has two side so each folio will consist of two pages. For some reason unknown to me when people refer to where in a census book a record can be found they refer to the folio number not the page number. If you get hold of a copy of the appropriate census film at your local Mormons Family History Centre then you can wizz through to the right folio rather than searching page by page. The 1851 census was the first one in England when a lot of detail was given. 1841 had names and rough ages but did not give the relationships of the people nor exactly where they were from, just the county. So many years back, as a finding aid, lots of Family History people in England set about producing indexes of the 1851 census records. These are not arranged as recorded but by surname and then given name and thus the only way to guess whether people are related is to see if they are on the same folio. One folio would cover several houses so having the same folio does not mean the same household. If the person is important to you then the actual census should be checked. The census for Ruswarp has the reference - Census No HO 107, Piece Ref No 2374 and the index gives, for the YEOMAN name: (all were born in the county of YKS) Given name age Where born Folio David 38 Barnby 573 David 3 Ruswarp 573 Ellen 18 Egton 551 Francis 7 Ruswarp 573 Henry 21 Ruswarp 573 Jane 72 Lythe 539 Jane 8 Ruswarp 573 John 2 mth Ruswarp 573 Maria 42 Barnby 573 Mary 49 Whitby 527 Mary 48 Lofthouse 527 Mary 39 Barnby 573 Mary 6 Ruswarp 573 Rachel 23 Whitby 527 Thomas 77 Barnby 573 Thomas 11 Barnby 573 Note: IGI index shows the following: Maria Yeoman-born 5-10-1807 in Lythe, Yorkshire, England.
