a. Note:   A distant relative (second cousin, once removed) Lois Barbara Wiles Varn said that her grandfather, Joseph Ellison Wiles, had been raised by his maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Burkett, the mother of Julia Burkett. Julia
 Burkett's husband, John Martin Wiles, had died in June 1864, from a disease contracted in an army camp, and, this relative added, Julia had "run off with some Yankee." She also said that times were hard, and that people did whatever was
 necessary to survive.
