Note: A distant relative (second cousin, once removed) Lois Barbara Wiles Varn said that her grandfather, Joseph Ellison Wiles, had been raised by his maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Burkett, the mother of Julia Burkett. Julia Burkett's husband, John Martin Wiles, had died in June 1864, from a disease contracted in an army camp, and, this relative added, Julia had "run off with some Yankee." She also said that times were hard, and that people did whatever was necessary to survive. Times & Democrat Newspaper Feb. 2, 1937-Mr. & Mrs. J. E. Wiles celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the home of their daughter, Mrs. Herman Jones, on Russell St., Orangeburg, S. C. Mr. & Mrs. Wiles were married at Jericho Meth. Church, Cameron, SC half a century ago, the bride being Miss Susan Barbara Staley. Orangeburg County Courthouse records: William W. Staley sold to J. E. Wiles 30 acres plus 20 acres on Jan. 5, 1898 -book 35-page 280-281 $120.00 and $100.00 respectively.
