 Sometime in his early manhood, he moved to Lone Star, SC in Orangeburg County (now Calhoun County). There he operated several large farms (mostly cotton, corn, and foodstuffs). He moved to Orangeburg, S.C. in early 1903 and became a merchant
 (grocery business). He was also a planter on a smaller scale. On Jan. 8, 1903, he purchased a piece of property (with buildings thereon) located in the forks of the "Old Charleston Public Road" and"the River Public Road". The property
 consisted of approximately six acres, was generally known as "The Forks" or "The Forks of the Road". This property was purchased from Mr. Robert Lide, an attorney, for the sum of $1,400.00. Deed recorded in Orangeburg County on 2-12-1903 in
 Book D, page 12.
