Note: copy death cert. #245944 received 7-9-1975 cert. #6465 Elizabeth J. Lane dated 4-25-1925 Edward and Elizabeth used to go to Ga. to see her relatives. Once they brought back a jug.Elizabeth's grandchildren called her MaMa. 1975 Elizabeth's son Clifford's death certificate lists her birthplace as Sparta, Ga. My Aunt Elizabeth, (Tea) related to the family that our ancestors of Elizabeth Jane Bruce Lane were connected to European Royalty; but we have not been able to verify this as of 1975. Hi Anne, I contacted you several years ago trying to find info on my connections to the Bruce family. Well, I am at it again. I have been going over previous correspondence; census records, emails, and what is online. My gr grandmother was Elizabeth Jane Bruce, born 12-30-1862 in (her husband said Augusta, Ga. on her death cert. and her son's death cert. shows her birthplace as Sparta, Ga.) Now, your gr grandfather, Terrell W. Bruce, shows a daughter on 1870 census in Sparta, Ga. named Elizabeth, age 8. She is the only Elizabeth I found in Sparta in 1870. Also, on 1880 census, Eliz. is no longer in household of Terrell; but I have found Eliz. in 1880 age 18, married to Edward Lane my gr grandfather, in Orangeburg County,SC with one child Earnest age 9/12 months born in SC. My gr grandmother's death cert. also lists the names of her parents; but it is really difficult to read: father: T. B. Bruce, born Sparta, Ga. (this is clear) mother: Martha ( and I cannot read the last name at all) born in Ga. I do know that my gr grandparents made trips to Ga. from Orangeburg to visit her family. In looking over your records at Ancestry; you show that Eliz. may have died as a child or young adult. But I also found that in the 1910 census, Terrell and Martha show that they have five living children and that both Margaret Frances Bruce Williams had died in 1906 and that her brother, James Henry Bruce had died before she did. So, in that case, Elizabeth should still be one of the five living children, correct? Also, it is to be noted that Elizabeth's daughter, Lillie, named her first son, William Terrell. And Elizabeth's daughter, Letha Mae, named five of her children after her brothers and sisters: William Edward, Mae Elizabeth, Leatha Martha, John Thomas, Rosanne,Richard Henry, and Ethel Olean . Let me know what you think. Thanks for your help, Jimmie Anne May 2006 Reply: Hi, Jimmie Ann! It does look like we have a match, doesn't it? My goodness, you are the first new cousin I've found or whose found me in a long time!! Other lines I find more cousins, but they are more distantly kin. Somehow, the Bruce cousins are few in number, but closer related. And Elizabeth is about the only one we didn't know much about, too. I'm so glad you wrote me again, because a few months ago, Win XP went out on me and I lost all my saved e-mail. What a disaster for me! I knew my grandmother and her sister, Aletha, known as Aunt Letha to me. About 10 years ago, I connected with Aunt Letha's great granddaughter, and she had a photo album of Aunt Letha's, with very few names on photos. I scanned them, and will send you copies to see if you recognize any of them as your family. I'll also talk to my stepmother and see if the name rings any bells for her. She is the only one of that generation still living, and is of some help sometimes, although Daddy didn't talk much. I have free long distance, if you want to talk, send me your number and a good time to call. I'm on the west coast, so figure that into the hours. I just tried to call Carolyn Gowlowka, Aunt Letha's ggd, and she wasn't home right then, so I'll catch her later. The mother was Martha Rebecca Thigpen, and through her, I have her line back through European royalty. Through the descendants of her lines, we are also connected to some of the first families of Jamestown. Aunt Letha lived 8 years longer than Grandmother, so I remember her better. She was always so sweet and kind. Grandmother was such a strong minded woman, one did not dare to disagree with her to her face. She was always the queen bee. In her later years after Grandfather died, she went to live with one relative after another, wearing out her welcome. Daddy got really upset when Mother wouldn't let Grandmother live in the house they bought after WWII, but Mother was wise in that respect. I suspect that is partially the reason he filled for divorce a year or so later. Anyway, have to take my twin grands to get their mother from work, will talk to you later. Cousin Anne June 2006
