Notes
a. Continued: -Medical: Mary was born with spina bifida, and was unable to walk until age 13. She overcame most of her disability, died suddenly at age 21.
-From Louise Robitalle: I called mother and asked her about Mary Spooner. She said that she remembered her well. She lived in Ottawa with her Aunt Annie at 98 Renfrew Avenue. Mother remembers that Mary had difficulty in walking. She said that she thinks that Mary had worked in the government and that she has an Ottawa newspaper article on her with her photo. She’s not sure whether it was her obituary or not.
-From Nancy Renaud: I have a picture of Mary Spooner taken at Aunt Annie Spooner Redmond's house in Ottawa, Ontario. Rita O'Neil Tremblay gave this picture to me.
-Recollections of Dorothy Spooner Curran: Mary Spooner was born with spina bifida. She saw the protrusion on her back. Mary walked before 13 as she was a very determined young woman. She was also very smart. From birth, she had no control over her bladder and Aunt Minnie was washing constantly to keep her clean. Her feet were badly deformed but she was able to walk earlier than 13. Mary went to Ottawa in July of 1941 and died in June of 1942. She caught an infection that killed her.
-From Sr. Rena Spooner. She lived with Mary at Aunt Annie's in Ottawa. She said that Annie was always telling Mary to slow down and rest but Mary refused to, saying she wanted to enjoy life. She dated and enjoyed life to the fullest. She was happy, smart and fun to be around. She worked for the British consulate. She got an infection in her back where her spine protruded and it traveled quickly to her brain and without antibiotics she died within a couple of days.
