Note: N519 The Cincinnati Enquirer (Cincinnati, Ohio); Fri, 30 Mar 2007; Page 24 Philip Gottling Jr. recorded memorable local music moments He was a fixture at many performances WYOMING - Philip Frederick Gottling Jr. had a 33-year career as a manufacturing manager at Procter & Gamble, but classical music played a significant role in his life Musicians remember his meticulous, behind-the-scenes work as a recording engineer for hundreds of local and visiting performers over the last two decades. A longtime resident of Wyoming, Mr. Gottling died on March 13 of coronary artery disease and emphysema. He was 76. Mr. Gottling began making recordings of local concerts in the mid-1980s, beginning with church programs and the Middletown Symphony Orchestra. By 1990, he was taping more than 300 concerts annually all over the region, including concerts of Chamber Music Cincinnati, the Northern Kentucky Children's Choir, Hyde Park's Knox Presbyterian Church and faculty and student recitals at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. He also made studio-quality recordings for professional musicians in his home. "Phil was a good friend to WGUC (90.9)," said Robin Gehl, vice president for programming. "The station did broadcast the fine, professional recordings he made, primarily of Chamber Music Cincinnati concerts." "He did hundreds upon hundreds of recordings of the finest quality," said his wife, Barbara. "You just don't find a recording engineer of his quality. He knew exactly where to place the microphones and he edited the production. That was distinctive about his work." His final recording was a December performance of the Cincinnati Symphony Youth Orchestra, which he had recorded for 30 years. "He was a fixture for those concerts," said Anne Cushing-Reid, manager of educational activities for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. "He recorded the Youth Orchestra concerts beautifully, and made sure that copies were available for the students." Born in Baltimore in 1930, Mr. Gottling graduated from Cornell University in 1952. He received his master's degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge in 1955. Mr. Gottling served in the United States Navy from 1952 to 1954 on the USS Scout, a minesweeper, in Charleston, S.C. He joined Procter & Gamble in 1955, performing management duties in plants in Baltimore; Kansas City; Quincy, Mass.; and Cincinnati. When he retired in 1988, he was manager of technical buildings operations in Cincinnati. An accomplished organist, Mr. Gottling played a three-manual Allen organ and piano in his home. He performed as Cornell University Chimes Master from 1949 to 1952. When the bells at Library Tower were refurbished in 1998, Mr. Gottling donated a new playing stand. He created a doorbell for his Wyoming home that rings the hour strike of the Cornell Chimes. Mr. Gottling and his wife hosted numerous musicians for extended stays in their home. That began in 1978, when the LaSalle String Quartet, College-Conservatory of Music's quartet-in-residence, brought promising European ensembles to study with them for a school year. They included string quartets and piano trios from Hamburg, Germany; Prague, Czech Republic; Frankfurt, Germany; Budapest, Hungary; Goteborg, Sweden; and Berlin.
