Dr. George K. Schweitzer in his informative book, GERMAN GENEALOGICAL RESEARCH, tells us that in that time period before the Civil War, the province of Alsace had a big cloth-making industry. They imported cotton from the US via the port of New Orleans and brought it to LeHavre. Rather than send empty ships back to the US, they converted the ships for passenger service and had extremely low rates for the passage. German emigrants from SW Germany went to Paris and then floated down the Seine River to LeHavre. Most of the ships went directly back to New Orleans but some stopped at other ports like New York City, exchanged passengers and then went on to New Orleans. You will see on a map that Alsace was west of Wuerttemberg.
