Note: Justus Butler 1813-1897 b.Cuyahoga Co., Ohio (1870 census shows Connecticut), married in OH in 1837, to 1st cousin Amanda Butler. About two years later, when his father died, they moved to Indiana (DeKalb & Noble Cos) for 10 years. He then bought 480 acres in Barry Co. MI for $1.25 per acre. He moved his family back to Ohio for 3 years while he cleared the land and built a house. Granddaughter Lucy Butler (1884-1984) wrote "He and grandma did not get along good and were divorced when the children, Sarah, [Harriet]Lucinda, Adam Clark, and [Jemima]Ann were well grown." Ann wrote to her Grandma Dec 28, 1869 "Father has bought my share of this place so as to have the sale of the whole farm. Mother says if you will come that she will send Frank and I after you so that Frank can drive the horse and buggy if you like to bring it, while you and I come on the cars [passenger train]." Justus left the family but mailed the farm payments to Ann and wrote to Clark. Family rumors said he went to live with the Indians. Lucy wrote, "After his divorce he went north and worked in the woods for awhile. Later he went to Missouri." The mother of Justus, the wife(s) of Jethro, (b. Mar 22 1783 d Sep 10 1839 son of Jethro/David/Thomas/John/Nicholas) is said to be Sarah or Polly Smith...possibly from Vermont. She was said to be born Mar 27 1793 and died Apr. 21, 1813 only three weeks after the birth of their 1st child, Justus S. (Mar 16 1813 - Oct 10 1897) The History of Cuyahoga Co., Ohio gives her name as "Betsey" and Jethro's marriage license extract lists her as "Sally Smith" Lucy Butler, wrote reporting that Jethro Butler had another child 13 years later (b abt 1826) who was also named Jethro (the 3rd one) That half-brother of Justus "settled in western part of Indiana, had 5 sons". The obituary of Justus Butler says in part "he was cared for by an aunt till his father married again when Justus was two. His father moved to Huron County [OH] when he was fourteen years of age. From that time he lived with his Uncle Butler, till his marriage to Lois A Butler when he was twenty-four. He then moved to Scipio [prob. Allen Co., IN] staying five years, then to Kendallville[IN] remaining there five years. They then came to Johnstown [Twp], Barry County [MI]..." The 1850 census shows him living alone in Assyria Twp, Barry Co. MI. Census records for 1870 show him living in Johnston Twp. with "Louisa", age 52; and in 1894 with "Bridget", aged 60.
