  Dear Anne,
... I also want to thank you for letting me know about George Brown's biography. I hadn't been aware of its existence before. I, too, was surprised to find so much about Sam in George Brown's biography. It makes me wonder if perhaps Aurelia was the one who gave the information for publication. Maybe that's why George deserted her around the time it was published ;). (Some of the information was wrong in any case; according to the records I found, Samuel Hendrick died Oct. 8, 1880 and she married George Nov 7, 1881).
I heard 2 stories about George Brown. One involved George's wife before Aurelia (I'm presuming it was your Sarah). Supposedly, in this story, George was so enraged at his wife that neighbors had to intervene when he dragged her by her hair to a creek or river to drown her. Aurelia mentions his cruel treatment to herself in Samuel's pension request in 1891.
The other story was that George loved to fight so much that whenever he and Franklin (my son's great-grandfather) witnessed a fight, they would join in with George saying, "Pick a side Frank!" I was never sure if they both ended up fighting on the same side or not.
