"George served during the Civil War in the 2nd N.Y. ( Harris Light) Cavalry Div. which was attached to Gen. Kilpatrick's famous cavalry division. George was considered one of the bravest and handsomest men in the service and when Gen. Grant died at Mt. McGregor, N.Y. George was chosen one of the guards to escort the remains from there to Saratoga, N.Y." (ref. - Downing Spirit of '76)
