a. Note:   At the age of 5, she was adopted by a cousin, and for 22 years she lived in Taunton, MA. She never married, having lost her fiance who was killed in the Civil War.
 When President Abraham Lincoln called for teachers for the Freedmen in 1864, she volunteered and was sent to Portsmouth VA as a teacher, remaining there until June 1865.
 In 1872 she came to Michigan with her brother John C. Downing. She was living with brother John in Sunfield, Eaton Co. in 1880, and then moved to Vermontville with them where she remained until her death in1928.
