Note: [Fender & Halford.FTW] Re: Hendricks-Seneca Co New York From: cyberiannomad Posted: 22 Mar 2008 10:08PM GMT I received Helums Hendrick's Civil War Pension file, and while it wasn't as rich in genealogical information as his brother Samuel's was, it did have some things of interest. According to a family bible that was referred to in his pension application, he was born 3 Jan 1838 in Junius, Seneca Co., NY. Hannah Marie Packer's birth date was given as 4 Sept 1835. They were married in Barry Co., Mi., on 29 May 1857. They had two daughters, Jennie Alida, b. 6 Aug 1860, and Sylvia Ann, b. 27 Dec 1863. Hannah died 5 May 1882 in Grand Rapids, Kent Co., Mi. (In other papers in the file his daughters are referred to as Jennie Brothers & Anna Green, and were living in Wexford Co., Mi. in 1898 - I found Jennie in the 1900 census, but I'm not sure about Anna). He mentions that the correct spelling of his name is Helums, and that he was named for a neighbor in NY named Peter Helums (I tried looking for someone by this name on Ancestry, but couldn't find anyone). Helums was 5'6", with blue eyes, light hair & a fair complexion. Helums married for a second time to Emily Lyon Aldrich in 1883, but he didn't give a date. Emily died 9 July 1918. Helums died 22 Apr 1926 at the Michigan Soldiers Home in Grand Rapids. One of the things that I found interesting is that at the age of 87, in order to continue receiving his pension, he had to have a doctor examine him to make sure he couldn't work to support himself . I guess the government was worried about octogenarian slackers. Hope there was some information in there of use or interest. Roxanne
