Lang IN HER 98th YEAR A very worthy representative of a virile and hardy generation in the Nepean district,, Mrs Esther Lang, died at her residence, Union Road, Penrith, on Tuesday at the advanced age of 97 years. Good and upright living in her case conduced to that length of days which was traditional with district pioneers. About eleven years ago Mrs Lang suffered a fracture of the right leg, from which she quite recovered; then about four years age she suffered similar misfortune with the left leg, but healing was not so complete in that case. Since then Mrs Lang had not walked. She was practically bed-ridden for the last eighteen months, and about a week before her death had a fall from bed, after which she steadily declined. Deceased was born at Yarramundi on 22nd January, 1839, and was a daughter of the late Mrs Ann Paris, who was also a native of the colony, being born at Baulkham Hills. Thus it will be seen that the family is Australian in a very exceptional degree. Mrs Paris (whose maiden name was Carver) married again and left a large family, but Mrs Lang was the only child of Mr and Mrs Wm. Paris. Deceased was married to the late Edward Lang at Windsor in 1861. After her marriage she resided at Bathurst, Yarramundi, Castlereagh, St. Marys, and Penrith. She had been living in Penrith for over 60 years. Her husband, who was a well known railway engine driver attached to the Penrith depot, died on 5th June, 1895. Mrs Lang had a wonderful memory, and could converse very interestingly on happenings of the old days. She could tell of many stirring incidents of the bushranging and gold-adventuring days. She is survived by three daughters - Mrs Mason (Erskineville), Mrs H. M. Lawes (22 Birriga Road, Bellevue Hill), and Mrs Fryer (Union Road. Penrith) There are 26 grand children, 40 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. Edward Lang, a son, died in South Africa 21 years ago, and Mr William Lang, another son, was accidentally killed at Newcastle in 1914 while engaged as a railway employee in shunting operations. Mrs Peisley, a daughter, died In Junee some 32 years ago. Five sons of Mrs Peisley served in the war, one being killed in France. The funeral, which was largely attended, took place on Wednesday. Services were conducted at the house In Union Road, in St. Stephen's Church, and at the graveside in St. Stephen's cemetery by Rev. A. A. Mutton, Rector of Emu Plains. A number of beautiful wreaths were forwarded. ------------------------------------------------------
