  OBITUARY
History of Elizabeth Price - (presented by her brother Jim Farrell at her funeral)
Betty was born at Coonamble, central New South Wales, on 6th November, 1926, and was the eldest of five children. Her father was Bill Farrell and mother was Lucy Wilson.
The children born were first Betty, then Pat, Jim, Joan and Don Farrell.
Betty was educated at the Brigidine Convent School and grew into a nice, quiet, sensible girl. She started her first job with her Aunty Tess Lane at the Commercial Hotel in Coonamble, and just on turning 18 she joined the A.M.W.A.S. (Australian Medical Women's Army Service) and was off to the big world with 6 of her female friends from Coonamble. There was some restraint from her father Bill, but the law stated that she could join, and that she did, at Riverwood in Sydney, then to Concord Repatriation Hospital where she served until the end of World War 2.
However, whilst at Concord Hospital she was to become friendly with a medical orderly named Alan Price who on many occasions came to Coonamble on leave and stayed with us. Alan was a lovable type of chap and they became engaged and eventually married. They were married at the Ashfield Catholic Church and had their reception at The Amory Wedding Reception Rooms.
They set up house at Moore Park Road, Moore Park, near the old Sydney Showground. Alan went back to his old job as a clerk in the goods section at Darling Harbour Rail and Betty took a position at Mark Foys City Office as a clerk. She stayed there for some years and moved to Qantas at Qantas House city office.
Then they purchased land at 1 Chatsworth Street, Fairfield, and began to build their Castle. Soon after the news of their house being finished we were notified that a pregnancy had occurred and soon we were presented with a lovely little girl named Robyn. Not long after that occurred, a baby boy was born and was christened Alan Jr.
Her husband, Alan, passed away and Betty was on her own to raise the children, pay for the house and she struggled until she decided to go back to work. Betty was lucky in finding a friend in Father Gallagher at the Revesby Parish and was employed to help Father run the Credit Union of which he was famous for.
Later Betty was offered the Manager's job at the Fairfield St Vincent De Paul Store and retained that job for quite a time.
Betty then moved to greater things in joining the Patrician Brothers School Fairfield as Canteen Supervisor and met some wonderful Brothers, School Committee Members, students and mothers.
I remember the story of one little boy who called at the tuck shop every 11 o'clock break and would ask if he could help her. This boy came from a very large Catholic family and money was very tight for his parents then. Betty would ask if he had any play lunch, and the answer was always no. So she would make up a play lunch and slip it out the back door to him. The little boy is now a parish priest in the Sydney area.
Also Brother Angus and the other Brothers, too numerous to mention their names, looked after Betty as if she was their sister.
Betty loved her faith and would do anything to help her parish. I believe Father Prendergast helped her a lot and that Father Gatt, I believe, has been her best mate since Father Prendergast moved on.
Betty has made numerous friends throughout her life and was never too lonely as her friends made sure that she was busy.
A wonderful friendship was bonded with the new Australian mothers who had settled in Fairfield and sent their sons to the Fairfield Patrician Brothers School. They cared for Betty and she cared about them and when Betty retired from the Canteen they showered her with flowers and gifts in appreciation.
I believe I should mention some people. Mary Tector, Rose McGregor, Neida Francis, Joyce Langmack. Also all the Kennedy girls, Nell Dunn from The Entrance, Vera Bennett, Ethel Kaldersaun, George Basin.
Betty was a great believer in her club, the Fairfield RSL, and stirred all her family and friends to participate in the facilities they offered.
Betty's home was always open to family and friends. Betty was a lover of music and dancing and many times participated in the parish dances and balls with the friends mentioned before.
On the notification that Our Lady of the Rosary Retirement Village was to go ahead, she placed her request to purchase a unit immediately. She sold her 1 Chatsworth Street premises and moved into her new unit where she helped to look after eight of her fellow neighbors. She also organised concerts, housie, tours and many functions to entertain all. Her faith was always strong at the Village and attended her daily Mass with love for Our Lord and Our Blessed Lady.
Betty has left a legacy for all of us to adhere to:
"Love your neighbor as you would love yourself"
Goodbye my dear Sister from all who loved you very much.
