E. Power, in the Inquiry Court yesterday. The examination of witnesses was carried out by Senior-sergeant Langusch. The inquiry was closed in each case. Referring to the death under anaesthetic at the General Hospital on February 5 of William Henry Hitchcock, 67, of Emu Park, Dr. D. E. A. Buchanan said that he was called to the hospital by Dr. Phillips on February 5, the deceased's wife being also present. The symptoms pointed to a serious condition in the abdomen and, with the consent of the patient and his wife, it was decided to perform an immediate operation. The operation was performed about midday. The symptoms pointed to the likelihood of a ruptured gastric ulcer, but the operation disclosed that the trouble was due to a huge haemorrhage of the pancreatic gland behind the stomach, for which trouble the symptoms would have been similar. lt was seen that nothing could be done, said witness, and the only thing to do was to finish the operation as soon as possible and get the patient back to bed. Before they could finish the operation, however, the patient collapsed under the anaesthetic and died in the ward. Witness said that the opening of the abdomen was necessary to determine the trouble and there was no other way of saving the deceased. Constable Beatson also gave evidence. -------------------------
