A BOY named Peter Yates had his hand seriously injured while bird-nesting on Thursday. It appears Yates and a friend named Charles Hitchcock, who had been spending a few days at Mr. Horton's selection on the coast, were returning from the beach, where they had been for a swim, when both boys went up a tree bird nesting. Yates was on a limb ot the tree with his arms round it, when Hitchcock, who was notching the tree with a tomahawk, accidentally cut Yates' fingers, completely severing the fourth finger above the second joint, and cutting the third finger so much so that it was hanging by the skin. The blood was staunched by means of handkerchiefs as well as could be done, and Yates arrived home in town about midnight. Dr. Callaghan visited the boy yesterday and bandaged up the fingers. The fourth finger will have to be amputated at the second joint and it is possible that the third finger will have to be taken off. Yates is progressing as favourably as can be expected.

  "ASTONISHING THING."
 Kraft-Walker Process.
 "ADVANCE IN KNOWLEDGE."
  BRISBANE, July 16.
The action by the Kraft Cheese Co. against Oliver K. M'Anulty for infringement of patent rights was continued today.
Charles M Hitchcock, manufacturer of dairy produce for 40 years, gave evidence that he claimed to be the first manufacturer of cheddar cheese in Queensland. The Kraft-Walker process was to him an astonishing thing. He first saw it at Foggit Jones' factory. In witness's opinion, the inventor deserved a gold medal.
Undoubtedly what witness saw was a real advance in knowledge. The process was one of the finest things discovered in dairying over the past 50 years. One of the great advantages of cheese so manufactured was its keeping quality. The flavour was retained from the original cheese.
Frederick Walker, Melbourne, managing director of the Kraft Walker Cheese Co., said the company had been shipping Kraft cheese to the East and it had not had one complaint. The court adjourned until tomorrow.
