THE CARDIFF AND MERTHYR GUARDIAN, SATURDAY, JULY 6, 1872.
FOUND DROWNED - An inquest was held on Monday, at the Town Hall, on the body of John Price, a mason, who was found drowned in the canal on Sunday. There was no evidence to show how the body came there, and a verdict of "Found drowned" was returned.

THE CARDIFF TIMES, 6TH JULY, 1872.
A MAN DROWNED IN THE CANAL. - Early on Sunday morning an elderly man named John Price, who is a mason by trade, and in that capacity was employed in the construction of the new tower in Cardiff Castle, fell into the old canal. His body was recovered an hour after, life, of course, being then extinct. The corpse was removed to the dead-house by P. C. Murley (20). Mr. R. L. Reece, coroner, held an inquest on the body on Monday. From the evidence it appeared that the deceased, who lived at Penylan, went, on Saturday night, to attend his club, at the Carpenters' Arms. He left there early, after having taken three or four glasses of beer, to return homewards, it was believed. Instead of doing so, however, he went in the direction of the canal, upon the side of which he had been working, and it is supposed that he went there with the intention of fetching his spectacles from the pocket of a coat he left there. Nothing more was heard of him, except that his body was found, as before described, in the canal, where a splash had been heard an hour before by Mr. Lewis, who was standing at the corner of Crichton-street at the time, The verdict returned was accidental death.
