A very painful accident, which resulted fatally, occurred at Mr. Atherton's saw mill at Mount Hedlow about half past eleven o'clock yesterday morning to a man of about fifty-two years of age, named William Wilton. He was working at the circular saw bench, and when in the act of packing a large saw, his foot slipped, and he fell down in front of the saw, which cut his right leg from just below the knee cap, completely severing it. The cut extended about three inches from below the knee down to the calf of the leg, which was much torn and shattered. Young Mr. Atherton, who observed the accident, at once gave the alarm, and the machinery was stopped. It was then found the unfortunate man was in great agony and his leg was bleeding very much. Every effort was used to stop the flow of blood from the cut, but all of no avail. It then became evident that Wilton would have to be brought into town, and a spring-cart being procured the man was made as comfortable as possible, and a start was made for Rockhampton. He was in great agony all the time, and his moans were very pitiful. When within about half a mile of North Rockhampton it was observed by the son of the injured man that his father was sinking fast, and was barely able to speak. All possible haste was made to reach the hospital, but on arrival there about ten minutes to six it was found that he was dead. The body was then examined by Drs. Thurston and Callaghan, and on the above facts being reported to the Police Magistrate, he gave the order for burial.
