  Old Times.
Mr Edward Carroll, of Cobar, writes as follows:-
In the last issue of the Nepean Times I notice the report of a marriage of two young people belonging to old and respected Nepean River families - Gilligan and Stapleton. They are not the first couple of the same names, and I might say the same families, who in Penrith ventured on the matrimonial gamble. It is now nearly 50 years since Martin Gilligan and Biddy Stapleton set a good example in this line. I believe the bridegroom in this case is a son of this worthy couple, who, I am pleased to know, are still alive and well, and back again to the neighborhood of their childhood, near the old town of Penrith. I well remember the bride's mother, who was a niece of the late Mrs Andrew Heavey, then living in High street, opposite Mr Philpot Robbins' blacksmith and wheelwright establishment. In the year '60 of the last century she came along from the Land of St Patrick to Penrith, N.S.W. She and I were then new chums, but she had the advantage of being a fine healthy and good looking young woman; and very soon the young men around began casting sheep's eyes her way, yours truly being one of them. But Owen Stapleton came along, and went to work in earnest, and eventually she said yes; and after the late Father Brennan made one of them he took her away up the oountry, where they prospered and reared a decent family, If I remember rightly, the late Mr Owen Stapleton and Mrs Martin Gilligan were first cousins. Those were the days when the old Catholic Chapel and the good old Father Brennan were good enough for the young Catholic people in and around Penrith who wanted the matrimonial knot tied, and they were not too slow about it in my time in Penrith. And then we had no long newspaper reports about the dresses the ladies wore or how they looked. A good old "tin kettling" was about all the publication we knew of in those days.
Being fairly well acquainted in the old days with the fathers, mothers and people of the young oouple, I here wish them long life and happiness.

  DEATH
  Mrs. Gilligan
After a long illness, extending about fifteen months, Mrs. Gilligan, wife of Mr. Martin Gilligan, of "Carthona", Emu Plains, passed away on Sunday night last, at the age of 69 years. Deceased, whose maiden name was Bridget Stapleton, was born at Frogmore (now called Orchard Hills), being a daughter of the late Richard Stapleton, and sister of Mr. Richard Stapleton, of Camden, and Mrs. T. Rigney, and the late Mrs. John Gunnell. She was married in 1864 at St. Mary's Cathedral, remaining in this district with her husband until 1888, when they removed to Coonamble, returning again in 1908, first going to Lambridge and then to Emu Plains to reside. There are 12 children, viz: Mrs F Farrell, Mrs Sam Elliott, Joseph, William, James, Peter, Mrs G. D. Lane (all of Coonamble), Dick (Auburn), Annie, Eleanor, John and Martin (of Emu Plains).
The remains of the late Mrs. Gilligan were conveyed to the Catholic Church, Penrith, on Tuesday, where the Rev Father Barlow was awaiting the arrival. After having read the prescribed prayers, as directed by the Ritual, Father Barlow spoke in laudable terms of the good qualities of the deceased. It was not his intention to widen the wounds that had only been opened in the hearts of her relatives and friends; but he felt justified in meting out praise to one of the best of women; the best of mothers. As a proof of her being an ideal mother, the fact of her children's undying love for her made itself most manifest, Father Barlow spoke of the deceased's filial devotion to her Church. In season and out of season, she was most edifying in the good example she gave - not only to her children, but to her co-religionists. Such exemplary devotion was needed nowadays. Finally, the rev gentleman referred to Mrs Gilligan's praiseworthy charity to all who needed it. This noble virtue was characteristic of the deceased. On behalf of those assembled in the church - and there were many representatives of the different other denominations present - and of himself, Father Barlow extended deepest sympathy to the husband, children and relatives of the late Mrs Gilligan.
The interment afterwards took place at Cranebrook R.C. Cemetery, Father Barlow conducting the burial service. All of the children, excepting Mrs Farrell and Mrs Elliott, were present.
Among those who attended the funeral were: Mr Richard Stapleton (brother), Camden; Mr T. Rigney (brother-in-law), Sydney; Mr John Landers (nephew), Coonamble; Mr John Gillett (cousin), Coonamble; Mr W. Farrell, Sydney; and Mr J. A. O'Donnell, Coonamble.
