Note: -------------------------- Mary Birmingham was born around 1797 in Ireland. She married Peter Gilligan in 1810 and had one daughter Ellen in 1816. Peter was found guilty of stealing potatoes in 1817 and transported to Australia in 1818 for 7 years. Mary and Ellen eventually followed Peter out to Australia arriving 2nd February, 1827 on board the vessel Brothers as part of the list of free women and children. She is listed as Mary Gilligan and one child. Peter obtained his Certificate of Freedom in 1824 and possibly established himself before bringing out his family. There are records of Mary and Peter having another child, William in 1827, and Mary in 1829. Mary obviously fell pregnant soon after arriving in the Colony. How Mary and Ellen survived in Ireland for 8-9 years without Peter is amazing. Considering his crime was stealing potatoes, the family were obviously facing starvation even before he was tried and convicted. Mary appears on the 1828 NSW Australian Census along with her husband Peter and their daughter Ellen aged 11, in the District of Evan. Mary Gilligan died November, 1830, It is sad to think Mary struggled for all those years in famine riddled Ireland and then died a few short years after arriving in Australia. ---------------------------- New South Wales, Australia, Wives & Children of Irish Convicts, 1825-1840 Name: Mrs Gilligan Ship: Brothers Ship Departure Year: 1827 Remarks: Husband Peter Gilligan has land at Seven Hills ---------------------------- 1828 New South Wales, Australia Census Name: Mary Gilligan Estimated Birth Year: abt 1798 Arrival Ship: Brothers Arrival Year: 1827 District: Evan Residence Age: 30 Residence: New South Wales, Australia Residence Date: 1828 ----------------------- Mary's Gravestone reads: "Gloria in Excelsis Deo Erected by Peter Gilligan In memory of his wife, Mary Gilligan, who departed this life Novbr 1st, 1829 Aged 33 years Also her son, William Gilligan, an infant Also the aforesaid Peter Gilligan who died July 26, 1867 Aged 79 years Erected by Martin his son --------------------------
